All About That Bass

March 24, 2015 books, fun, miscellaneous 9

Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Today’s post is all about music and books! I love music; I love books; what could go wrong? This is for the Fantasy Favorites Read-A-Thon prompt, and one of the books I chose is even fantasy. I hope you’re all proud of me.

The Playlist

I didn’t really intend to make the playlist for certain books only, but the first song I wanted to include is clearly a Jace song, and after I had that one, I started thinking of other Mortal Instruments characters. The first half of the playlist is for The Mortal Instruments, and the second half is for The Darkest Minds. I don’t think the songs always play in the original order on 8tracks playlists, but here’s how I originally sorted them:

1) I’m So Sorry – Imagine Dragons

I am slightly obsessed with this song right now, as you might be able to tell, because I already talked about it in my last post. The reckless feeling of the song made me think of Jace, and then I looked at the lyrics a little more closely and decided it’s the PERFECT song for him. Especially “love yourself to death”, “a son of a stepfather” and “keep tryin’ to conceive that death is from above” remind me of him, but it’s also just a general vibe.

2) Bring Me To Life – Evanescence

This definitely fits Jace in City of Lost Souls, but it could also be for Dimitri after Shadow Kissed. Choose your favorite!

3) Shatter Me – Lindsey Stirling

This song makes me think of Isabelle. It’s beautiful, but also kind of sad and demanding. She always has trouble letting other people get close to her, and I think the lyrics perfectly describe that.

If I break the glass, then I’ll have to fly
There’s no one to catch me if I take a dive
I’m scared of changing; the days stay the same

I’m frozen by the fear in me
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me

4) My Immortal – Evanescence

This song is also Izzy. Her little brother’s death hit her hard, and she’s still haunted by him in City of Heavenly Fire. It was heartbreaking for everyone, but Izzy seems to have taken it the hardest. I thought about leaving the song out, because I already have an Evanescence one, but it fit so perfectly.

5) Sympathy for the Devil – The Rolling Stones

At first, I considered this song for Valentine or Sebastian, but it just didn’t feel right. This song is clearly much more Magnus. He’s “been around for a long, long year” and I’m sure he “stole many a man’s soul to waste”, if you catch my meaning, and I think you do. (I’ll go stand in the corner now.) Magnus has demonic origins, and – most importantly – the song’s got style.

6) By Myself – Linkin Park

Do I trust some and get fooled by phoniness,
Or do I trust nobody and live in loneliness?
Because I can’t hold on when I’m stretched so thin
I make the right moves, but I’m lost within

I ask why, but in my mind
I find I can’t rely on myself

The lyrics remind me of Ruby from The Darkest Minds, because she can never really know who to trust, but she needs to trust at least some people to stay alive. A lot of the time, she feels like she can’t even rely on herself, because she can’t trust her own abilities not to betray her.

7) Everlasting Light – The Black Keys

Ruby might not be able to trust everyone, but she can usually trust Liam.

Let me be your everlasting light
The sun when there is none
I’m a shepherd for you
And I’ll guide you through

I think he definitely is all of that for Ruby, and the slower pace of the song to her frantic one expresses their relationship and his personality perfectly.

8) Anxiety – Black Eyed Peas feat. Papa Roach

This song is basically for all the kids in The Darkest Minds. It’s anxious (who would have thought) and fast-paced, and it describes that feeling of always being on the run, from other people, but mostly from yourself. Their experiences are probably going to haunt them their whole life, so they can’t stop running even when they’ve long escaped.

9) Break Stuff – Limp Bizkit

I can totally see a Ruby/Cole training session with this song as the background music while they smash their heads in. Seriously, these kids are angry.

10) Bullet With Butterfly Wings – Smashing Pumpkins

The line “Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage” is SO Clancy. He’s probably the one most defined by what happened to him when he was a child, and he doesn’t even realize how much of a prisoner he still is.

11) Red Balloon – Charli XCX

I thought I’d end on a happy note, so I chose this song for the very last scene in In the Afterlight. It’s maybe not quite THAT upbeat, but one of the playlist prompts was to pick a song for a scene I’d like to see happen, and this is definitely something I’d like to see happen. I just want them all to be happy and carefree and together.

Today I opened my eyes
And now I’m so happy and free
I got my friends by my side
And that’s all that matters to me

Hybrid Theory is my favorite album! I like most of their newer stuff too, but that’s where it’s really at. :D And Shatter Me is awesome, I just discovered it a few weeks ago!
