Cake Conversations Banner Kopie - Kopie

The Acquisition

I moved into this place about a year ago, and ever since then, there has been a wide, sad expanse of wall above my couch. I always meant to hang up a big picture there, but I never quite found the right one. Then I visited a friend, and she had a shelf full of books up on her wall. You might be able to guess what my next Christmas wish was. After a trip to hell Ikea and some near misses with the wiring in my wall, the shelf was finally up. I expected to have a lot more space for my books now, but somehow my other shelf is still almost as full as before (bottom right).

The Sorting

Now I don’t have a picture, but trust me on this: IT WASN’T PRETTY. Books were flung across the room, hands were thrown up in despair and a “go to hell” shelf was created. How are there so many ways to sort books? Do you do it by author, by genre, by color, by size, completely random…? After a quick existential crisis, I put a couple of series on the top shelf (why do all my series have dark covers?) and used the bottom shelf for random loners and favorites, framed by stacks of classics and to be reads so they don’t fall off the shelf. On the right side, I have three smaller black boards to display some of my favorite series.

The Verdict

Positively enthusiastic! I’ve had the shelves for a couple of days now and they make me happy every time I look at them. Unfortunately, I won’t ever be able to move again after all the work my mother and her boyfriend put into getting them up (what, you didn’t think I got my own hands dirty, did you?), but hey; I hate moving anyway.

Random Ramblings

cake (ha!)

In other exciting news, I decided I have a signature cake now. I’ve made it twice after finding the recipe online and both times it turned out delish. It’s called chocolate heaven and it tastes like – you guessed it – chocolate heaven. It’s a super easy chocolate cake with an almost liquid core, and I love it to death. Hence the “heaven” part of the name, I guess.

I’m currently reading In the Afterlight, the third book in the The Darkest Minds series, so prepare for a review soon. So far I’m VERY into it (apart from a few minor issues), but I’m curious about the ending, so we’ll see. After that I’m on a reading ban until after my exam in less than two weeks ARGH WHY DIDN’T I STUDY MORE, but I have a great selection to choose from to reward myself if when I pass that.

Music is very important to me because I’m constantly on some sort of public transportation and I NEED my music to pass the time. And even if it weren’t for that, I get random urges to turn the volume up and throw a mini dance party when I’m alone at home, so it’s vital I have some great music to get my groove on. Unfortunately, I’m constantly listening to the same songs and, even though they’re all great songs, I’m at the point where I just can’t listen to the same things over and over again anymore. For that reason I decided to invest a little into new music. I’ve gotten into the habit of buying songs I really like every once in a while, but lately I haven’t been loving any particular artists enough to buy an entire album. I spent like two hours looking for good beats on youtube yesterday, but I didn’t come up with much. I finally bought Iggy Azalea’s album because I liked Fancy and Black widow and I’m digging it. Apart from that I only got Lil Wayne’s A Millie because that beat’s still sick. I’d like some more variety, but I don’t want to waste my money on something I might not even like. I’m also looking into finally buying some good headphones so I can actually enjoy the bass, but they’re expensive, which means there’ll be a lot of testing and saving beforehand.

Shannon at It Starts At Midnight is hosting an epic (anonymous) survey about the book blogging community, so make sure to stop by her post to weigh in. Also because SURVEYS ARE FUN.

What’s been happening with you guys? Anything new and exciting? What’s been getting you to turn up the volume lately? My taste in music is fairly eclectic, so bring on the recs.

Oh your new bookshelf is so pretty! I love those little smal ones that house a few books.
I have a weird sortign system which doesn’t make much sense, but I mostly sort on author, but at leats keep series otgether and the ehight of my bookshelves is important as well. At least I can find a book when I am looking for one.

I really like them too; they’re perfect for showing off favorite books!

I love sorting by color, but then you have to tear series apart and WHO WANTS THAT. :D True, actually being able to find the books afterwards definitely helps haha

Aww thanks for mentioning me!! And I LOVE the shelves! I almost bought red shelves and now I really wish I had. And I ADORE the floating shelves! I am thinking about getting some for my absolute favorite books. As for sorting, UGH. For my “read” books, I do it alphabetically by author. But for my TBR… I have 2 shelves currently, both sorted by author alphabetically. One is MUST read ASAP, and one is just “I’ll get to you when I can”.

I love that you referred to Ikea as hell! I am a huge Ikea fan but… yeah. The closest one is about 3 hours away, so it is always an adventure. And the aftermath is always bad. Also, that cake sounds AMAZING!

Songs… hm.This is hard. My tastes are kind of eclectic too. Some of my current favorites are Dangerous by Big Data, Flaws by Bastille… I am having a hard time! I always listen to THG and CF soundtracks too (Mockingjay’s was not so good, sadly!)

Sure, my pleasure! And there’s always a next time for the red shelves. :)

Hahaha I love that to be read system, I did something similar. I have a stack of to be read books that I really do want to get to soon, and then there’s another shelf with books I haven’t read that’s more meh, yeah, whenever I get around to it. :D

Oh, I think Ikea has some great stuff for really affordable prices, but actually GOING there is my idea of a nightmare. For some reason they felt the need to cover up all the windows, so it feels like an underground bunker and then there are like ten thousand children running around and you can’t get out in the middle of it because you only reach the exit if you do the whole tour and …yeah okay I’m going to stop now. Let’s just say I REALLY don’t like the shopping experience. :D

Thanks for the recs, I appreciate it! I just watched the Dangerous video, that stuff’s insane hahaha (but it’s a good video). I like Flaws. :) Oooh soundtracks! I love listening to movie soundtracks, but the scores kind of bore me most of the time. I love that The Hanging Tree became an actual song that’s being played on the radio!

Thanks, I really like them! :)

Sure, it’s a really easy recipe, but if you use it, you have to pretend it takes five hours and is incredibly complicated, and NO ONE will ever be able to recreate the culinary masterpiece you just created. Good? Okay, alright then:

      You need 200 g butter, 200 g chocolate (70%), 250 g sugar, 4 eggs and 3 spoons of flour.

Break the chocolate into small pieces and melt it together with the butter. Then add the sugar and stir until it melts as well (it never really melts for me, but I find it doesn’t actually matter). Let it cool a little, and then add one egg after the other, using your hand mixer to beat the dough until it looks smooth. At the end, add the three spoonfuls of flour, but just mix it in with a spoon. Pour the dough into your buttered baking dish and bake for about 25 minutes in the bottom half of your oven. It should be done but still have that perfect almost-liquid core after 25 minutes, but you can also leave it in for a little longer than that (but why would you). If the cake for some reason doesn’t look great, it also tastes great cut into brownie-sized pieces. Enjoy!

Your book shelves are fabulous! I love the colors, and I love that they hang on the wall. I don’t see many of those. Lately, I’ve been thinking about buying a bookshelf. I haven’t owned any in ages because I’ve moved around soooo much the past 10 years. The books I’ve decided to keep are still stuffed in boxes. But, I’m hoping that I’ve found a place to call home longer than a year and a half. We’ll see though…

Oh yeah, I totally get that. I’ve moved plenty of times and it’s not getting better with being a student and all that, but it’s really important to me to feel comfortable in my room, so I decided it’s worth it. If I have to move again in a year, I’ll at least have had cool shelves for a while!

BUT CAKE. I would gladly die for a piece of that cake…yes Chocolate Heaven is a fitting name. *wipes drool off laptop*

EEP! Those bookshelves are BEAUTIFUL. *flails* I love that they kind of look like they’re floating too! ^_^ My bookshelf is from IKEA and also screwed into the wall. I never want to move anyway. ;-) Buuut….sorting them is a legit problem! Right now mine are sorted by colour, but it’s kind of inconvenient because the blue shelf is filled but not the purple shelf. So if I read a blue book I have to put it in the cupboard and THAT’S NOT FAIR ON BLUE, IS IT?!! *has book crisis*

ALL THE CAKE. And I have actual cake UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE. Well… actual cake for me, no one here gets to actually eat a piece, so I probably shouldn’t go pointing fingers. :D

AREN’T THEY? Psssht moving sucks. Ooooh color sorted books are my favorite because it looks so pretty BUT THOSE SERIES tho. Haha well, the blue books had to learn life isn’t fair sometime, at least it’s for a good cause. :D
